Our Commitment to Distance Learning

Distance Learning has been a core function within the School of Architecture and Construction since 1992. Since that time, we have developed partnerships in Hong Kong, Malaysia, Australia, Trinidad, China and, most recently, Singapore. Over the same period, we have expanded our distance learning provision and we now offer a range of programmes in two main disciplines: the built environment and occupational safety and health.

You will find more information on the range of programmes we have to offer by following the links shown at the top of this page.

The University of Greenwich

Although often referred to as a "new" University, Greenwich has a history dating back to the late 19th Century. The origins of the University can be traced to the Woolwich Polytechnic which opened in 1891, only the second to be established in the United Kingdom.

Woolwich Polytechnic enrolled 504 students in its first year and since then, with a few interruptions, has experienced continual growth. The University of Greenwich now has more than 20 000 students from more than 100 countries studying on a full-time, part-time and distance learning basis on undergraduate and post-graduate programmes.

The name was changed to Thames Polytechnic in 1970 recognising its growing geographical influence and in 1992 University status was awarded and the University of Greenwich was born. The University is now located in three main campuses in South-East London and Kent; Greenwich Maritime, Avery Hill and Chatham Maritime. All the campuses have buildings of architectural and historic interest, perhaps most notably the Greenwich Maritime Campus, which is located in the former Royal Naval College - world heritage site.

Avery Hill Campus, the home of the School of Architecture and Construction, is located in the 86 acre Avery Hill Park and comprises of two main sites, Mansion Site and Southwood Site. Other Schools on the Avery Hill Campus include Health and Education.
