BSc (Hons) Occupational Safety, Health and Environment

The BSc (Hons) Health, Safety and Environment by distance learning is a novel approach to delivering health, safety and hygiene training and will allow a wider range of applicants to gain access to this growing field of employment.

This programme is accredited by both the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) and to Certificate level for the British Occupational Hygiene Society (BOHS).

The programme is normally studied over two years with students studying 60 credits each year. The courses studied are shown on the table below. Applicants without a suitable health and safety qualification, for example the NEBOSH Certificate or equivalent, will be required to successfully complete the 30 credit Introduction to Occupational Safety Practice course prior to joining the BSc.

Entry Requirements


Applicants are expected to be working in an appropriate professional field. Interviews may be held locally to determine a candidate's potential to benefit from this programme. Candidates seeking admission must normally possess the following qualifications (or its equivalent):

  • Proficiency in English such as IELTS with a minimum score of 6.0 or TOEFL with a minimum score of 550; applicants, who do not satisfy the minimum English proficiency requirement, may be required to attend an interview or take an English enhancement course;
  • AND
  • A degree or equivalent in an appropriate subject;
  • or
  • A diploma, higher diploma, higher national diploma, advanced diploma or professional diploma in OSH fields with evidence of having gained substantial knowledge, skills and experience in OSH (This may be provided by means of a portfolio);
  • or
  • Appropriate professional qualifications such as the NEBOSH Diploma with relevant professional experience in the OSH field. Such applicants will be evaluated on their individual merit (may be required to sit for a qualifying examination).
